Text: 1 Thessalonians 4:3 – "For this is the will of God, your sanctification..."
Introduction
Sanctification is a vital part of the Christian life. It is the process by which God sets us apart, making us holy and conforming us to the image of Christ. Many people misunderstand sanctification, thinking it is either instant perfection or something we accomplish by our own strength. But sanctification is a work of God that requires our participation.
Today, we will explore three key aspects of sanctification: what it is, how it happens, and why it matters.
I. What Is Sanctification?
Sanctification comes from the word "sanctify," which means to set apart for a holy purpose. The Bible speaks of sanctification in three ways:
- Positional Sanctification – When we are saved, we are declared holy in Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11). This is our new identity in Jesus.
- Progressive Sanctification – The lifelong process of growing in holiness and becoming more like Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18).
- Final Sanctification – When we will be completely holy and free from sin in heaven (1 John 3:2).
Sanctification is not just about avoiding sin—it is about being transformed into the person God created us to be.
II. How Does Sanctification Happen?
Sanctification is both God’s work and our responsibility.
The Holy Spirit Works in Us
- Sanctification is primarily a work of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17).
- He convicts us of sin, leads us into truth, and produces the fruit of the Spirit.
The Word of God Transforms Us
- Jesus prayed, "Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth." (John 17:17).
- The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the more we are shaped by God’s holiness.
Our Obedience and Surrender
- We must actively choose to obey God (Romans 6:13).
- Sanctification requires discipline—prayer, worship, resisting temptation, and seeking righteousness.
Trials and Suffering Purify Us
- James 1:2-4 reminds us that trials strengthen our faith and refine our character.
- God uses hardships to shape us into His image.
III. Why Does Sanctification Matter?
It Proves Our Faith
- Sanctification is evidence that we truly belong to Christ (Hebrews 12:14).
It Brings Us Closer to God
- Sin separates us from intimacy with God, but holiness draws us near (Psalm 24:3-4).
It Makes Us a Light to the World
- A transformed life is a testimony to others (Matthew 5:16).
- People should see Christ in us by the way we live.
It Prepares Us for Eternity
- God is shaping us now for our eternal home with Him (Philippians 1:6).
Conclusion
Sanctification is not an option—it is God’s will for every believer. It is a journey, not a destination. Some days we may struggle, but God is faithful. Philippians 2:13 reminds us, "For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."
Let us commit today to pursue holiness, relying on God’s strength and surrendering daily to His will. Are you allowing God to sanctify you?
Let’s pray: Father, we thank You for calling us to holiness. Help us to surrender to Your work in our lives, to walk in obedience, and to reflect Christ in everything we do. Sanctify us by Your Spirit and Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
