Text: Amos 8:11-12
“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.” (Amos 8:11-12)
Introduction
We live in a time when people try to fill an emptiness inside them. An emptiness that neither money, fame, nor pleasures can satisfy. Many look for answers in cults, false religions, drugs, philosophies, or temporary pleasures. But the more they search in these places, the more frustrated and empty they feel.
Amos prophesied about a special kind of hunger and thirst: not for bread or water, but for the Word of God. And we clearly see this happening today. The world is crying out for a word that brings life, hope, and peace.
1. The True Hunger of the Soul
Human beings are not only physical bodies but also spiritual beings. That is why feeding only the flesh is not enough.
-
Bread feeds the body, but only the word of God feeds the heart.
-
Jesus said: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4).
Without the Word, the soul becomes malnourished, weak, and lost.
2. Seeking in the Wrong Places
Amos warns that many will wander from one place to another in search of the Word, but will not find it. This happens because:
-
They search in religions that deny Christ.
-
They look to philosophies that exalt man instead of God.
-
They turn to addictions that only bring destruction.
These paths may give temporary relief, but they never satisfy the true hunger of the soul.
3. The Mission of the Church: Feeding the Hungry
God calls us to be the answer for this hungry world.
Isaiah 58:10-12 reminds us:
“If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”
We, as Christians, have the food the world needs: the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our responsibility to offer the living water that flows into eternal life (John 4:14).
4. A Call to Each of Us
-
There are people around us dying spiritually of hunger.
-
If we have the Word and do not share it, we are like someone who keeps bread while their neighbor starves.
-
We must preach, teach, pray, and extend our hands.
The promise in Isaiah is clear: if we care for the hungry and the afflicted, we will be like an unfailing spring, used by the Lord to restore lives and generations.
Conclusion:
The world is thirsty and hungry for the Word of God. Many search in the wrong places, but it is our mission to point them to the only true source: Jesus Christ.
Let us not allow this hunger to remain unanswered. Let us be light, witnesses, and channels of God’s love in this world.
Final Appeal
Today, God is calling us to open our mouths and feed the spiritual hunger of those around us. May we answer as Isaiah did: “Here am I, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8).
Let's pray?
“Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that the world is hungry and thirsty for Your Word. Many seek in the wrong places what only You can provide. Use me as an instrument to bring Your gospel and to satisfy troubled hearts. May I be like a fountain of living waters, guided by Your Spirit, bringing light to those in darkness. Renew in me the passion for Your word and the courage to share it with love. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
