Text: Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.”
(Isaiah 40:31 – NKJV)
Introduction
We live in a fast-paced world that values speed, immediate results, and quick answers. Waiting is often seen as a weakness. However, in God’s Kingdom, waiting is not wasted time — it is a place of renewal, preparation, and spiritual growth.
Isaiah 40 was written to a weary and discouraged people. God reminds them that He is eternal, all-powerful, and never grows tired. The promise is not that difficulties will disappear, but that those who wait on the Lord will receive renewed strength.
1. What Does It Mean to Wait on the Lord?
Waiting on the Lord does not mean doing nothing. It means:
-
Trusting God’s timing
-
Depending fully on His strength
-
Remaining faithful even when answers seem delayed
Waiting is an active posture of faith, surrender, and obedience.
2. The Benefits of Waiting on the Lord
1. Renewed Strength
God does not merely restore strength — He renews it.
“He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.” (Isaiah 40:29)
When our strength ends, God’s strength begins.
2. Rising Above Circumstances
The Scripture says that those who wait on the Lord will mount up with wings like eagles.
This speaks of a higher spiritual perspective. Instead of being controlled by problems, we learn to see life through God’s promises.
3. Endurance for Every Season
“They shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
God sustains us in intense moments (running) and in long, ordinary seasons (walking). His strength is sufficient for both.
3. The Eagle as a Spiritual Symbol
The Bible often uses the eagle as a symbol of strength, vision, and renewal.
1. Eagles Fly High
Eagles do not fly close to the ground. They soar above storms.
“I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.” (Exodus 19:4)
Lesson: Those who wait on the Lord are lifted above fear, doubt, and discouragement.
2. Eagles Face the Storm
While other birds flee from storms, eagles fly directly into them, using the strong winds to rise higher.
Lesson: Trials can become tools for spiritual growth when we trust God.
3. Eagles Have Sharp Vision
Eagles can see far distances with clarity.
Lesson: Waiting on the Lord sharpens our spiritual vision and discernment.
4. Eagles Go Through Renewal
Eagles go through a painful process of renewal to extend their lifespan.
“Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:5)
Lesson: God uses difficult processes to renew our inner strength and prepare us for greater purpose.
4. Practical Application
Waiting on the Lord teaches us to:
-
Trust God’s timing
-
Develop spiritual maturity
-
Gain clarity and direction
-
Grow stronger through trials
-
Live with renewed faith and hope
Waiting is not losing time — it is gaining strength.
Conclusion
Just like the eagle, we are called to rise, to trust, and to soar. When we wait on the Lord, we are not standing still — we are being renewed, strengthened, and prepared for higher ground.
Those who wait on the Lord:
Receive new strength
Rise above life’s storms
Gain spiritual vision
Experience renewal
May we choose to wait on the Lord and trust Him in every season of our lives.
Let's pray!
Lord, our God and Father,
we come before You with open and trusting hearts.
Many times we feel tired, discouraged, and without strength,
but today we choose to wait on You.
Teach us to trust in Your timing and in Your will,
even when we do not understand the process.
Renew our strength, just as You promised in Your Word,
and help us to soar like eagles, above fear, anxiety, and difficult circumstances.
Help us to face the storms of life with faith,
knowing that You are in control of all things.
Give us spiritual vision, discernment, and courage
to walk faithfully without giving up, until we see the fulfillment of Your promises.
Just as the eagle goes through a process of renewal,
renew our inner being, strengthen our faith,
and prepare us for new heights and new seasons that come from You.
We trust in You, we wait on You,
and we rest in the assurance that You never fail.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
