Prayer is the greatest privilege of the Christian. It is not an empty monologue, but a dialogue with the Creator. The Bible assures us that God not only hears us, but also takes pleasure in answering us. However, God's response is connected to our relationship with Him.
II. ANSWERED PRAYERS IN THE BIBLE
God has demonstrated His power in every era.
1. In the Old Testament
Hannah (1 Samuel 1):
A barren and distressed woman who prayed for a child. God heard her silent cry and gave her Samuel.
Elijah (1 Kings 18):
A man subject to the same passions as we are, who prayed and fire came down from heaven; then he prayed again and the rain came.
Hezekiah (Isaiah 38):
He prayed after receiving a sentence of death. God saw his tears and granted him fifteen more years of life.
2. In the New Testament
The Early Church (Acts 12):
They prayed without ceasing for Peter while he was in prison. Before they even finished praying, Peter was knocking at the door.
The Blind Man of Jericho (Mark 10):
He cried out for mercy above the noise of the crowd. Jesus stopped to hear him and healed him.
III. REQUIREMENTS FOR PRAYER TO BE HEARD
The Bible establishes principles so that the channel of communication remains open.
Repentance and Confession:
Unconfessed sins hinder our prayers.
Scripture: Isaiah 59:2
"But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear."
Right Motivation:
God does not answer selfish desires.
Scripture: James 4:3
"You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."
Faith and Conviction:
We must believe in the promise and in the character of the One who promised.
Scripture: Mark 11:24
"Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."
IV. THE DEPTH OF GOD'S WILL
Effective prayer seeks what God already desires to give.
1 John 5:14–15:
If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
Luke 18:1:
We should always pray and never give up (perseverance).
1. Alignment with God's Will
Prayer is not an attempt to convince God to do our will, but a process of surrendering our will to His. When we ask within what He has planned, the answer is guaranteed.
Key Passage: 1 John 5:14–15
"And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him."
Application:
Often God's “no” is protection, and His “wait” is preparation. Praying “Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10) is the greatest sign of Christian maturity.
2. The Need for Perseverance and Persistence
God hears the first prayer, but sometimes He waits for our perseverance to test our faith and prepare our character to receive the blessing.
Key Passage: Luke 18:1–7
(The Parable of the Persistent Widow)
Jesus told this parable to show that we should “always pray and not lose heart.” If even an unjust judge answered the widow, how much more will God bring justice to His chosen ones who cry out to Him day and night?
Application:
The answer may not be immediate, but delay does not mean denial. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened (Matthew 7:7).
3. The Heart that Pleases God (Righteousness and Obedience)
The Bible teaches that obedience and caring for others open the windows of heaven for our prayers.
Key Passage: Proverbs 15:29
"The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous."
Key Passage: 1 Peter 3:12
"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayer."
Let's pray!
Lord our God and our Father,
In this moment, we come before You with humility, recognizing that You are a God who hears every prayer and knows the depths of our hearts.
Father, teach us to pray according to Your will. Align our desires with Your purposes. We do not want to ask out of selfishness, pride, or wrong motives, but we want to seek what pleases Your heart.
Purify our intentions, Lord. Teach us to ask with faith, but also with submission to Your will, trusting that Your plan is always better than ours.
And now, Father, if there is anyone here who needs to draw closer to You, someone who wants to surrender their life, their burdens, or their prayers before Your altar, may this be the moment.
Touch hearts, Lord. Give courage to take a step of faith.
We believe that You hear and answer.
We pray in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
