Text: Isaiah 38:1
Introduction
Life is full of uncertainties. One moment, everything seems fine, and the next, we are confronted with challenges, illnesses, or even the reality of death. In Isaiah 38:1, King Hezekiah, a faithful servant of God, receives a shocking message:
"Thus says the LORD: Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live."
This was not just a warning about physical death; it was a call to spiritual readiness. Today, this message is just as relevant for us. Are our lives in order before God? If we were to stand before Him today, would we be prepared?
1. The Reality of Life and Death
Hezekiah was a king, a leader blessed by God, but even he was not exempt from sickness or death. This reminds us that no matter our position, wealth, or status, we are all mortal. James 4:14 says:
"You do not know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away."
We must not live as if we have unlimited time. God calls us to always be prepared.
2. Setting Our House in Order
God’s command to Hezekiah was clear: "Set your house in order." This means we must examine our lives and align them with God's will. What does this look like?
- Spiritual Order: Are we living in obedience to God? Have we repented of sin and accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior?
- Family Order: Are we leading our families in faith, love, and forgiveness? Do we have unresolved conflicts that need healing?
- Financial Order: Are we managing what God has given us with integrity and generosity?
- Service and Purpose: Are we fulfilling the calling God has given us, or are we wasting time on things that have no eternal value?
3. God’s Mercy and Power
Although Isaiah’s message was one of death, Hezekiah responded with prayer and humility. He cried out to God, and in Isaiah 38:5, God extended his life by 15 years.
This shows us that God is merciful. When we turn to Him with sincerity, He listens. Maybe today, God is calling you to repentance, to restoration, or to a deeper commitment to Him.
4. Living Each Day Prepared
Jesus taught us in Matthew 24:44:
"Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."
We should not wait for sickness or a crisis to get right with God. Today is the day to set our house in order. Let us live every moment as if it could be our last, walking in faith, obedience, and love.
Conclusion
Hezekiah’s story is a reminder that life is fragile, but God is sovereign. The question is: Is your house in order?
- If you knew today was your last day, would you be ready to meet God?
- Are there things in your life that need to change before it’s too late?
Let us not wait for a crisis to turn to God. Instead, let us live every day being prepared, trusting in His grace, and walking in His purpose.
Prayer: Lord, help us to set our lives in order, to live in readiness, and to walk closely with You each day. Give us wisdom, strength, and a heart that seeks You above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
