What is your foundation?

          Matthew 7:24–26 (NIV)

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”

Introduction:

Every one of us is building something.
Whether we realize it or not, day by day, choice by choice, we are building our lives—our character, our future, our legacy.
And Jesus, in this passage, wants us to stop and ask: What foundation are you building on?

1. Hearing vs. Doing: The Great Divide

Jesus begins with "everyone who hears these words of mine..."
But He doesn’t stop there. The difference between the wise and the foolish is not in hearing but in doing.
Many people hear the Word of God. They listen to sermons, read devotionals, and know the verses by heart.
But the test of faith isn’t how much we know—it's how much we live.

"Faith without works is dead" – James 2:17

You can build a beautiful house, but if the foundation is weak, the beauty won’t matter when the storm comes.

2. Storms Will Come

Jesus doesn’t say "if" the rain comes,He says"the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house."
Storms are not optional. They are part of life.
Illness, loss, betrayal, financial struggle,doubt.

They come to the wise and the foolish alike.
The question is not whether the storm will hit.
The question is: Will your house stand when it does?

3. The Rock That Holds

What is this "rock" Jesus speaks of?
It's not just belief in God.
It’s obedience to His Word.
It’s aligning your choices, your values, and your priorities with the teachings of Jesus.
It’s forgiving when it’s hard.
It’s loving when it’s inconvenient.
It’s trusting God even when you don’t understand.

This rock is not always easy to build on.
It takes more effort to dig deep and lay the foundation on solid ground.
But in the end,it’s the only foundation that lasts.

4. Sand Looks Good… Until It Doesn’t

The foolish man built on sand.
Sand is quicker. Sand is easier.
It looks good at first glance.
But when the storm comes,it all comes crashing down.

How many lives have looked successful on the outside—money, fame, influence—but were built on sand?
When pressure comes,they collapse.
That’s what happens when we build our identity on anything other than Christ.

Conclusion: What Are You Building On?

So I ask you today—what are you building your life on?
Are you just hearing, or are you doing?
Are you building on the rock or the sand?

You don’t need to have everything figured out today.
But start with one brick. One act of obedience.
One decision to forgive.
One prayer of surrender.
One step toward Jesus.

Because if you build your life on him,the storms will come—but your house will stand.

Let’s pray:

Lord, help us not only to hear Your words but to live them.
Give us the strength to dig deep, to build wisely, to trust You through the storms.
May our lives be rooted in You—the solid rock, our firm foundation.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
