Text: Matthew 21:13
“It is written,” He said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” (Matthew 21:13)
We live in a time when the focus of many churches has drifted away from their true purpose. Commerce, profit, and marketing have, in some cases, taken the place of worship, prayer, and genuine preaching of the Word. But what does Jesus teach us about this?
1. JESUS AND THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE
In the context of Matthew 21, Jesus enters the temple and sees a shameful scene: merchants, money changers, and people profiting in a place that was meant to be sacred. Jesus responds clearly and firmly, driving out the merchants and declaring that the temple must be a “house of prayer.” How many churches have turned the pulpit into a stage, faith into a product, and worship into a show? When fundraising becomes more important than salvation, we are repeating the mistake of the money changers.
2. THE TRUE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH According to the New Testament, the Church is: – A house of prayer (Matthew 21:13) – The Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27) – The pillar and foundation of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15) – A place of fellowship, teaching, discipleship, and service (Acts 2:42-47)
The Church exists to glorify God, proclaim the Gospel, care for people, pray, and manifest God’s Kingdom on Earth. It is not a business. It does not aim for profit. It should not manipulate emotions to sell blessings or promise material wealth in exchange for offerings.
3. THE DANGERS OF COMMERCE IN THE CHURCH
Turning the church into a disguised marketplace can bring serious consequences: – It shifts the focus from Christ to money (Matthew 6:24) – It exploits the faith of vulnerable people – It brings scandal and dishonor to the name of God – It drives away the Holy Spirit, who is grieved by spiritual corruption.
Jesus called those who did this “robbers" not only because they were selling things, but because they were stealing the sacred purpose of the temple and exploiting the faith of others.
🔥 4. We Need a Heart Reform
More than criticizing structures, we must examine our own hearts. Ask yourself:
-
Am I seeking God, or only what He can give me?
-
Do I give joyfully and by faith, or as a way to bargain with God?
-
Does my church value numbers more than the presence of God?
👉 The same cleansing Jesus did in the temple must happen inside us!
✝️ Conclusion: The House of God Must Be Holy
The Church needs to return to its original purpose. Worship services must be centered on God, not performers. Prayer must return to being a priority, not a ritual. The message must be Christ—not material gain. A true Church:
-
Prays with fervor
-
Loves with sincerity
-
Serves with humility
-
Lives with holiness

🙏 Let's Pray?
"Lord, purify our hearts and Your Church. May we be moved by Your presence and not by earthly interests. Help us to restore the holiness of Your house so that Your name may be glorified. Let every church building and every believer’s heart become a true house of prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
