Don't retreat in the face of adversity

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."Joshua 1:9

We all face adversity. Sometimes it comes like a sudden storm, financial problems, illness, loss, betrayal, or emotional exhaustion. At other times, it feels like a long waiting season where we pray, strive, and yet see no immediate solution. What should we do in such moments? Today, the Lord invites us: Do not retreat, do not give up, do not be discouraged.

1. God is with us in the battle

Joshua 1:9"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Joshua was about to take on a huge responsibility. He had every reason to be afraid. But God strengthens him with a powerful truth: You are not alone. This is also God’s message for us today. The One who called you will sustain you.

2. Keep going: your labor is not in vain

2 Chronicles 15:7"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."

Galatians 6:9"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

No effort is in vain when we walk with God. Even if the fruit takes time to appear, God does not forget your faithfulness. Keep loving, serving, praying, and sowing.

3. Do not throw away your confidence

Hebrews 10:35"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded."

In difficult times, the enemy tries to make us doubt God’s promise, His presence, and His power. But the Word reminds us: Don’t abandon your faith. Don’t back down. Trust! Your victory is on the way.

4. Even in pain, God is at work

2 Corinthians 4:7-11"But we have this treasure in jars of clay... We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed..."

2 Corinthians 4:16-18"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

Adversity reveals our weakness but also shows God’s power within us. Even while facing trials, God is shaping us, teaching us, and renewing us. What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory to come.

5. Persevere with courage and hope

James 1:12"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life..."

Romans 12:11-12"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."

To persevere is to keep walking even when strength is fading. It is to trust God's character even when we don't understand the process. God rewards those who remain faithful.

6. God gave us power, not fear

2 Timothy 1:7"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

John 16:33"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

In adversity, fear wants to paralyze us. But God has already placed within us everything we need: power, love, and self-control. We are not at the mercy of chaos—we are secure in Christ, who has already overcome the world.

7. God is our refuge at all times

Psalm 46:1-3"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear..."

Even when everything seems to fall apart, God remains firm. He is our shelter, our rock, and our security. Do not retreat, because He is with you.

Conclusion

You may be tired, wounded, discouraged… but don’t give up! God is with you. He strengthens the weary, renews the brokenhearted, and lifts those who remain firm. Remember:

  • Do not retreat!

  • Do not lose your faith!

  • Do not abandon your hope!

Victory comes to those who keep going.
