When the Wine Runs Out, Jesus Brings the Best

 John 2:1-12

Introduction

In John chapter 2, we find the first public miracle of Jesus: turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. This was not just a miracle to meet a material need at a feast, but a deep spiritual revelation of who Jesus is and what He does in our lives.

In the Bible, wine often represents joy, celebration, and fullness. This passage shows us what happens when the wine runs out—when joy is gone, when it feels like we’ve reached the end of our strength.

1. The Wine Ran Out

“When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’” (John 2:3, NIV)

The feast was at its peak, but suddenly the wine was gone. What an embarrassing situation! A wedding without wine in that culture was a disgrace for the family.

This also happens to us. There are moments when the “wine” of our life runs out:

  • Joy disappears in the middle of struggles;

  • Enthusiasm fades away in the face of difficulties;

  • Hope runs dry when we see no way out.

Maybe you’ve already experienced times when it felt like everything was over.

2. When the Wine Runs Out, We Must Turn to Jesus

Mary did not panic, she did not complain, but she brought the situation to Jesus:

“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’” (John 2:5, NIV)

This is the secret: when the wine runs out, when joy is gone, we must take our need to the Lord. He knows what to do.

How many times do we try to solve everything by ourselves and only grow more tired? But when we place it in His hands, the miracle happens.

3. Jesus Turns Water into Wine

Jesus told them to fill the jars with water — a simple, ordinary act. But when the servants obeyed, that water was transformed into wine of the finest quality.

Here lies a great lesson: Jesus takes our “water” — what is ordinary, common, and limited — and turns it into wine — something new, excellent, and far better than what we had before.

He transforms:

  • Sadness into joy;

  • Despair into hope;

  • Defeat into victory;

  • An ordinary life into an abundant life.

4. The Best Wine Comes at the End

The master of the banquet was surprised and said to the bridegroom:

“Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (John 2:10, NIV)

That’s exactly how Jesus works. When we think it’s over, He comes and brings the best. He has blessings prepared for us that we cannot even imagine. What appears to be the end for us can be the beginning of something greater with Him.

Conclusion

My dear brothers and sisters, maybe today you feel like the wine has run out in your life. Joy, strength, or hope has disappeared. But remember: Jesus is present. And when He steps in, water turns into wine. He not only restores what was lost, but He brings the best wine at the end.

Trust Him. The best is yet to come.

Let's pray:

“Lord Jesus, I bring my life before You. You know the areas where the wine has run out, where joy seems to be gone. Today I ask You: turn my water into wine. Renew my hope, my faith, and the joy of my salvation. Pour out upon me Your best blessings, the ones I could not even imagine. May Your presence always be the reason for my celebration, my peace, and my victory. I trust that the best is yet to come, because You are the Lord who makes all things new. In Your name I pray. Amen.”
