Dear brothers and sisters, today we will reflect on a central theme of the Christian life: forgiveness. Forgiveness is not only a commandment of God but also a path of healing and freedom for our souls. Jesus taught us that without forgiveness, we cannot fully experience the Father’s love.
1. Forgiveness is God’s command
In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says:
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Forgiveness is not optional for the believer; it is essential. When we refuse to forgive, we block God’s grace from flowing in our lives.
2. Forgiveness is Christ’s example
On the cross, even while suffering, Jesus prayed:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
If our innocent Lord could forgive His persecutors, how much more should we forgive one another?
3. Forgiveness sets the heart free
Holding grudges is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. The apostle Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 4:31-32:
“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
When we forgive, we are freed from the weight of bitterness and find peace in Christ.
4. Forgiveness restores relationships
The parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) reveals the heart of the Father, who receives His repentant son with love and celebration. Forgiveness not only removes guilt but also opens the way for restoration and reconciliation.
Conclusion
Forgiveness is not easy, but it is the way of love. When we choose to forgive, we become more like Christ and experience true freedom.
Today, if there is someone you need to forgive, surrender that pain to God and choose to obey His Word. Remember: the one who has been forgiven much must also forgive much (Matthew 18:21-22).
Closing prayer
“Lord, I thank You because in Christ I have received the forgiveness of my sins. Help me to forgive those who have hurt me, just as You have forgiven me. Remove all bitterness from my heart and fill me with Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
