Text:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)
Introduction
Beloved brothers and sisters, today we are going to reflect on a very important spiritual theme: the power of our words. Many times, we do not realize it, but every word that comes out of our mouth carries weight before God, before people, and even in the spiritual realm.
The Bible teaches us that our tongue can bring life or death, it can build up or tear down, it can bless or curse. Therefore, as children of God, we must learn to use our words to bring life, blessing, and victory.
1. The tongue has the power to kill or to give life
-
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” (Proverbs 18:21).
Our words can wound deeper than a sword. How many people carry hurts and traumas because of negative or offensive words?
On the other hand, a word of love, encouragement, and faith can lift up someone who is down. When we use our mouth to bless, we become instruments of God to generate life.
2. We must use words to build up, not to destroy
-
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29).
God calls us to be channels of edification. Negative words, destructive criticism, and murmuring do not come from the Holy Spirit. But when we speak words of faith, grace, and hope, we transmit the love of God.
3. Our mouth should be used to declare victory
-
“I believed; therefore I have spoken. Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak.” (2 Corinthians 4:13).
-
Jesus said: “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” (Mark 11:23).
Words spoken in faith have power! When we declare victory in the name of Jesus, heaven moves on our behalf. We must not use our tongue to declare defeat, but to prophesy life, healing, deliverance, and blessings.
4. We also use our words to intercede
-
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16).
When we intercede for someone in prayer, we are using our tongue to bring victory into that person’s life. By declaring blessing and protection, we align our words with the will of God.
Conclusion
Beloved, God has given us a powerful instrument: the tongue. It can kill, or it can give life. The choice is ours. As servants of the Lord, we must decide to use it to:
-
bless and not curse;
-
build up and not tear down;
-
declare victory and not defeat;
-
prophesy life over ourselves and those for whom we intercede.
Let's Pray?
“Lord, help me to use my mouth as an instrument of life. May every word I speak bring edification, blessing, and hope. May I never use my tongue to wound, but to heal. Teach me to declare the victory I have in Christ Jesus and to intercede for my brothers and sisters with words of faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
